International Master in Social Policy Analysis by Luxembourg, Leuven and Associate Institutes (IMPALLA)

The IMPALLA program is organized jointly by the CEPS/INSTEAD (Luxembourg) and the University of Leuven (Belgium). Its broader academic network includes the following partners: University of Nancy 2 (France), University of Tilburg (The Netherlands) and University of Luxembourg.

The academic program has three major objectives:

• to offer a solid theoretical foundation in comparative socio-economic policies, at the European level and beyond,
• to provide a thorough training in advanced research methodology,
• to give a well-founded expertise in policy evaluation, while developing corresponding technical skills.

The program leads to an advanced Master Degree issued by the University of Leuven where the IMPALLA students are registered as regular students.

The aim of the conference on e-Social Science is to bring together international representatives of the social science and cyberinfrastructure research communities in order to create better mutual awareness, harmonize understanding, and instigate coordinated activities to accelerate research, development, and deployment of cyberinfrastructure to support the social science research community.

Contributions are invited from members of the social science and cyberinfrastructure research communities with experience of - or interests in - exploring, developing, and applying new methods, practices, and tools that are facilitated by cyberinfrastructure in order to further social science research, and in studying the wider development of cyberinfrastructure-enabled research and its component technologies.

The aim of the summer school is to provide methods training opportunities in addition to MA and PhD curricula at European universities and to foster debate, interaction, and mutual understanding between various methodological perspectives at an early stage in academic careers. The curriculum covers introductory and intermediate courses in both quantitative and qualitative methods, also stemming from different ontological and methodological perspectives, and also features some plenary interactive events and debates, so as to increase alertness of young researchers to other methodological perspectives and possibilities. Some ECTS credits (3 or 5) can also be earned for the main, two-week courses.

The programme has been expanded to 4 intensive courses and 15 main, two-week courses :

- Registration to each course is accepted on "first come, first serve" basis -- it is thus advised to register well in advance (deadline for application & payment to obtain the lowest fee : 1 April 2007).

Topics: The Spring Seminar is a training course for social scientists interested in advanced techniques of data analysis and in the application of these techniques to data. Participants must have a sound basic knowledge of statistics as well as experience in the handling of PCs and of working with SPSS. The Spring Seminar comprises lectures, exercises and practical work using personal computers. While in the lectures the logic of models and the corresponding analysis strategies will be explained, during the exercises and in the practical work the participants are given the opportunity to apply these methods to data. As in the past Spring Seminars, the focus will be on teaching multivariate analysis techniques. In 2007 the general topic will be Advanced Categorical Data Analysis (CDA). In addition to the lectures, the participants will be provided with information about functions and services of the Zentralarchiv which is the German data archive for survey data.

Erasmus Mundus - External Cooperation Window

A new call for proposals has been launched by the Commission to fund higher education student and teaching staff mobility activities between European universities and universities from targetted third-countries (24 countries in total distributed in 9 geographical lots). This new action will provide funds for the organisation and implementation of student - from undergraduate to post-doctorate level - and academic staff mobility flows from and towards the third-countries concerned. The grants awarded to individual projects will fall between EUR 1 and 6 million depending on the geographical lot concerned.

The "Erasmus Mundus External Cooperation Window" results from a new initiative launched by the EuropAid Cooperation Office which will be implemented complementary to and in synergy with the Erasmus Mundus Programme.
